Cakes with Fresh Flowers

Cake topper arrangement of white garden roses and ranunculus with green lithianthus and mums

When it comes to decorating a cake, there are many different options available.  Some couples choose a figurine cake topper, sugar or gum paste designs, but topping your cake with flowers is a timeless, beautiful and cost effective way to decorate.  They can be placed in between tiers as elevated lifts to give your cake added height and presentation.  Or your flowers can be arranged as bunches around the tiers for little detailed touches of color.  And of course, as a cascade draping down the whole length of your cake from the top down to your cake table!

When using fresh flowers it’s important to keep the following in mind:
  1. Go organic whenever possible.  Florists use flowers from all over the world, and many countries do not have pesticide regulations.
  2. If you can’t go organic, have your florists wash the blooms and wrap or use picks on the flowers so they do not touch the cake.
  3. Always be sure to remove the flowers before serving.
Flowers like orchids and roses that have big, bright, colorful blooms and small stems are popular.  Roses and orchids are usually a popular choice for cake florals because they're available in a wide range of colors and sizes are accessible year round.  Other widely used cake flowers are mums, gladiolas and ranunculus.  Be aware that some flowers should not be anywhere near food and can be toxic.  Flowers like lillies have pollen on their stamens and plumerias have a sticky sap from their stems that shouldn't come in contact with food.  If you want to include these flowers on your cake, we will only use sugar flowers.

Talk to your florist ahead of time as they can suggest flowers and colors to match your overall scheme.  Then upon delivery we will arrange the flowers on your cake.

Sarah & Kevin were married on the biggest wedding date of the year, 10-10-10!  We're so honored to be the cake vendor for such a wonderful couple.  Together with their family and friends, they shared in a beautiful and intimate ceremony and wedding at Hale Moli'i at Kualoa Ranch.  Their photographer Athena Plichta did a great job at capturing their love for each other and their fun-loving, laid back style.

Sarah & Kevin chose a Cupcake Tree cake to display and serve to their guests.  Their cupcake tree was adorned with a full length cascade of sugar flower plumerias with touches of navy blue and moss green accents to match their wedding colors.  They chose our Yellow Butter Cupcakes filled with 4 different types of fillings:  Vanilla Cream, Lilikoi Cream, Fresh Strawberry Cream & Guava Cream.  Each was topped with different color sugar pearls for flavor designation.

Here are some highlights from the review Sarah & Kevin wrote on
our WeddingWire.com Vendor Profile:
"Kristin was great! The presentation of the cake topper and cupcake tree was beautiful . . . and the flavors were amazing! We will definitely be using A Cake Life again in the future."

Featured Wedding - Val & Val. One Name. One Cake.

Pictured:  Cupcake Bouquet.  Our cupcake bouquets made up of a dozen cupcakes decorated with fresh orchids in a decorative vase.  The illusion of our bouquets are made to appear as a flower vase.  Its a unique crowning accent to a decorative cupcake tree.
Valerie & Valient (Val & Val) were a married on September 19, 2010.  When we met with them to design their wedding cake they knew immediately they wanted a cupcake display for their wedding cake.  But instead of doing the traditional round cake topper, they wanted something different.  So after discussing a few ideas, we came up with our Cupcake Bouquet topper.  The bouquets give their cupcake tree a regal finish set against the beautiful ballroom backdrop.

Val & Val chose 2 flavors for their cupcakes: our Yellow Butter Cupcakes filled with Fresh Strawberry Cream filling and our Coconut Cupcakes filled with Pineapple Cream filling.  Each cupcake was topped with buttercream icing and small cherry blossoms color matched to the fabric of their bridesmaids dresses.  Their Cupcake Bouquet was accented with fresh white dendrobium orchids.

Congratulations Val & Val!!

Christie & Daryl's Wedding

Wedding season in Hawaii is in full swing and Christie & Daryl helped kick off the season with their beautiful May wedding.  We met with Christie & Daryl back in December when they were in town from Australia planning their Hawaiian wedding.  This Aussie couple coordinated their wedding from overseas with the the help of Dianna Shitanishi of Hawaii Weddings & Events.  Christie's decor was a vibrant and stunning arrangement of lush turquoise, fuschia pink and yellows.  Their photos by Terra Photography are so vibrant, it makes me happy when I look at their gorgeous colors!

This Aussie couple knew early on they wanted to incorporate their love for the beach and their color palette into a bright and fun-loving wedding cake set up.  We kept the design for the cake topper simple with a few pink plumeria sugar flowers and used their custom cake topper as the focal point.  Christie had this custom topper made of herself, Daryl and their cute pup!  I love how their pup got to wear a lei too!  Their Devils Food Chocolate w/ Oreo Cream filling and Red Velvet w/ Cream Cheese filling cupcakes, were each topped with a matching handmade pink plumeria sugar flower and a variety of sugar paste seashells, sand dollars and starfishes.

Christie & Daryl sent us this email after they returned to Australia:
"Aloha Kristin, WOW! That's all we can say about our cake.  It looked and tasted unbelievable!  Your detail and presentation is out of this world.  Choosing you to make our cake was the best decision we made.  I will definitely be recommending you to other brides!! If we could give you 20 out of 10 we would.  Mahalo again, Christie & Daryl"

Congratulations Christie & Daryl!

Katie & Bobby's Wedding

It was an absolute pleasure working with fun and laid back Katie & Bobby for their November wedding at the luxurious Oceanfront Oasis Estate.  Karine Matsumoto of Seasons of Life Wedding & Event Planning introduced us to Katie & Bobby, a young San Francisco couple who were planning their Hawaii destination wedding.  Katie's vision of her wedding was a colorful party where their 70 guests could have fun.

For their wedding cake, Katie knew she wanted cupcakes instead of a traditional tier cake so her guests could party the night away and grab dessert at their leisure.  Katie decided on this modern style square arrangement that held 260 mini cupcakes made up of 9 different flavors.  Some of the flavors she chose were Red Velvet w/Cream Cheese icing, Devils Food Chocolate w/Chocolate Buttercream, Coconut Cupcakes w/Buttercream icing and Mocha Cupcakes with Chocolate Buttercream.  To top off this stunning cupcake tower was a 6" Yellow Butter Cake filled with Lilikoi Cream and iced with Buttercream.  The arrangement was decorated with colors from Katie and Bobby's wedding palette of turquoise, orange and chocolate brown.  Several of the mini cupcakes were topped off with delicate, handmade blue hydrangea flowers to match the couples invitations and orange bauhinia orchids matching the floral decor were placed around the cake topper.

The cupcakes were a big hit with Katie & Bobby and their guests.  Katie left this review on our WeddingWire.com vendor profile:

"Kristin made our beautiful cupcake tower for our wedding. Nine delicious flavors of over 250 mini-cupcakes arranged artfully with a small square topper - vanilla with lilikoi filling (heaven in cake form) - amazing! Our guests absolutely loved the cupcake tower idea and thought the cupcakes tasted better then most wedding cakes they'd had - even a Wienstock cake!  Kristin was an absolute pleasure to work with - she's responsive, creative, smart and can create whatever you envision. And if you're suffering from wedding decision making overload she'll gently lead you in the right direction. Cannot recommend her highly enough!"

We had a lot of fun making Katie & Bobby's wedding cake.  Congratulations!  We wish you many years of love and happiness!
